Accessing your email
There are many ways to access email, but they can be broken into a number of groups.
- Webmail. Using webmail allows you to view the emails directly on the mail server. They remain on the mail server forever unless you delete them. This makes them easy to access from anywhere in the world, but can lead to filling up your disk space allocation if you are not careful. Here is a step by step guide for Using Webmail to access your email account.
- Accessing your email from a computer program or app. This might be outlook, windows live mail, or similar on a PC, or an email app on a mobile device or tablet. There are 4 different connection types for these types of programs.
- POP3 - this type of connection generally DOWNLOADS the email onto your phone or computer - though you do have the option to allow a copy to be left on the server so that the same email can be seen on multiple devices. If used correctly, this type of connection should not fill up your account as mail is downloaded to your computer and removed from the server. You can connect to POP3 using a secure or unsecure connection (meaning the information is encrypted or not between your computer and the server)
- IMAP - this essentially synchronises the email you have on your computer with that on the server. When you delete from one, it is deleted from the other also. Anything you leave in your inbox remains on the server, so care must be exercised to ensure the account does not fill up. The IMAP connection, like the POP3 connection can be secure or insecure.
